Hidden Storage: Clever Spaces That Don’t Look Like Storage
Having moved many times over the years, and with nearly 13 years of retail experience, I’ve picked up a few tricks for finding clever ways to ‘cram’ more stuff into unique spaces. Even so, I’m always on the lookout for new and inventive ways to create extra storage — especially those that keep things neatly out of sight. Let’s look at some secret hiding spots – secret hideaways you never knew your home had.
1. Under-Stair Storage/Space
This untapped and often overlooked space offers a wide range of ideas, both for storage solutions and for unique space ideas. Bobvila.com shares these creative considerations:
o Install drawers and cabinets to discreetly stash shoes and other goods. This is also a perfect way to create a mini-mudroom.
o Create a spot for children to play without their toys strewn about your main living areas.
o Carve out a cozy reading nook. Add a comfy bench, bookshelf, lamp and some fluffy pillows.
o Need a laundry room? Use the space to store a washer and dryer.
o Think you don’t have room for a home office? Think again – add a chair, attach a work surface to the wall, add a few shelves and VOILA – a home office!
o Build your own cocktail bar by adding shelves for glassware, a cabinet for liquor, and a countertop.
o Design a hideaway home for your pet – place your pet’s bed, water and food bowls, and favorite toys inside their own private nook.
o Better yet – how about creating drawers right inside your stairs!
2. Everyday Things, Hidden Spaces
There are storage options that are right before our eyes – we just need to get more creative in tapping into these ‘hidden gems’:
o Create disguised storage places for your valuables in hollow (faux) books.
o Don’t forget the trusty medicine cabinet – it’s been hiding clutter in plain sight for years. Or, add some storage behind a hinged designer bathroom mirror.
o Purchase double-duty furniture, such as ottomans, benches, beds, or lift-top coffee tables that open for storage.
o Hide a plain bulletin board or whiteboard behind an art piece.
3. Nooks, Crannies, and In-Betweens
Check out homestoragesolution101.com for building storage into these oft ignored areas in our homes:
o Corner Shelves: Corner spaces can be transformed into shelving units or display areas.
o Closets: Often, closets have vertical space that isn't fully utilized, as well as smaller hidden areas within.
o Behind Doors: The back of doors can be an excellent spot for hooks, racks, or shelving.
o Between Appliances: Gaps between kitchen appliances or furniture can accommodate slim storage solutions.
4. Tips for Storage
o Label containers for easy identification and/or use clear plastic containers.
o Keep frequently used items within reach.
o Think vertically - Walls, doors, and even ceilings offer untapped potential.
o Control the chaos by shopping at retail container stores for bins, baskets, and boxes.
Hidden storage doesn’t have to be complicated — it just takes a fresh eye and a few clever ideas. Creative storage can make any home feel more spacious and appealing — both to live in and, when the time comes, to sell. A well-organized home never goes out of style.
