The Weird Things That Make Us Feel Rich...Without Actually Being Rich

What makes you feel rich?

No, not the usual things that come to mind. Not having a million dollars in the bankNot buying a yacht or a private jet. Not taking a vacation to some remote, exotic island. And not driving a Bugatti. While our health—and the health of the people we love—is priceless, I'm not talking about those things either.

I'm talking about the little things that don't cost much, if anything at all. The little moments that quietly make us stop and think, "You know... life is pretty good." Those unexpected moments that make us feel just a little richer than we did a minute before.

Things like...

A completely full tank of gas.

The season’s first bite of sweet corn.

Opening the refrigerator and realizing there's enough food for dinner without making another trip to the store.

Finding a twenty-dollar bill in a jacket you haven't worn since winter (or coins in a couch cushion).

Having absolutely nothing scheduled on a Saturday morning. (Now that's a luxury!)

Cold watermelon on a hot Nebraska afternoon.

Ohhh…and those first few sips of coffee in the morning (and that awesome aroma!)

Getting every green light on the way home. (It feels like winning the lottery!)

Writing with a brand-new pen.

The smell after a summer rain or freshly cut grass.

Finding a shady parking spot in July or a cool breeze after a string of hot summer days.

A beautiful summer sunset.

Finding out you still have an hour before you have to leave.

Funny how it's often the smallest things that leave the biggest impression.

None of those things would make anyone's "Top 100 Ways to Become Wealthy" list. Maybe that's because being rich isn't always about having more.

The older I get, the more I appreciate those moments - especially the moments when I can simply exhale and think, "Ahhh..."

Every single day, little pockets of joy are waiting to be noticed. They may not be luxuries in the traditional sense. But they sure feel like it.

Maybe that's the secret.

Maybe feeling rich has less to do with what's in our wallet and more to do with noticing what's already in our lives.

And if we're lucky, one of those things is coming home to a place where we feel comfortable, safe, and grateful—whether it's a first home, a forever home, or anything in between.

Here's hoping you find a few of those "rich" moments this week... and maybe even notice a few you hadn't thought about before.
