This Might Not Be Great for My Business… But Here It Is Anyway
I didn’t set out to be in real estate. In fact, it wasn’t even on my list.
I got into it later than most people—dare I say at the age of 67?!—and not because I was drawn to the industry. I’ve never been someone who loves “sales.”
What I do like is people. I enjoy making connections, having great conversations, and I’ve always been interested in what’s going on underneath a decision—not just the choice, but how someone actually gets there.
So that probably explains why I see this industry a little differently.
And truthfully, this is the advice I’d give you whether I was in real estate or not.
Take something simple—like the question: “Is this a good time to buy or sell?”
In the real estate world, the answer you’ll often hear is… “it depends on if you’re looking to buy, sell, or invest.”
And that’s not wrong. It usually does depend on your situation.
But if I’m being completely honest…any of these can be true (or not) depending on you.
So – here are Teri’s Non-Salesy Tips:
1) Perfect timing sounds good in theory. It just doesn’t tend to play out that way in real life. Waiting for the ‘right moment’ can be a trap that keeps people stuck.
2) Looking at more homes is usually not the ‘ticket’ to finding the right home.
It can add to the confusion.
3) The more people you ask, the more opinions you get, and the more difficult the decision becomes.
4) Selling on your own (aka FSBO) can feel like you’re saving on commission. But in many cases, the final sale price ends up being lower than people expect.
5) A seasoned agent can bring a lot to the table HOWEVER…the best experience doesn’t always come down to years. It often comes down to attention, care, and trust.
6) Some ‘deals’ are just not meant to work out. There are times when the best outcome is the one that doesn’t happen.
7) Taking more time doesn’t always make the decision feel any easier. This is likely to be the largest purchase you will make in your lifetime, and waiting for it to feel easy might not be realistic.
I realize some of this might not even be great for my business.
But if we were sitting across from each other, enjoying a cup of coffee, that’s what I’d say.
